Sports-related injuries are a particularly cruel bunch. Not only are they inflicted during the activity we love so much, but they’ll often rob us of future enjoyment because we can no longer participate in that activity. Dr. Richard Scheinberg has been working hard to revise the second half of that previous sentence. Thanks to Dr. Scheinberg’s work in both private practice and at major hospitals, he has had the opportunity to treat tennis players who have sustained injuries that would have once been deemed career-ending. He is immensely proud of being able to turn lives around, but it took a long road and plenty of education and on-the-job training to arrive at this point. Given that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 3.2 million emergency room visits could be attributed to sports-related injuries, Dr. Scheinberg’s services and skills will continue to be in great demand.
Dr. Richard Scheinberg first earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University, in New Jersey, in 1971. He then obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University Medical School, which is located in Durham, North Carolina. After that, he would go on to complete a surgical internship and residency at Harvard University as well as at Massachusetts General Hospital, located in Boston. These years of education, internships and residencies exposed Dr. Scheinberg to the conditions he’d be treating during his career. While the CDC points out that those between the ages of 5 and 14 make up 40 percent of all sports-related injuries, Dr. Scheinberg knows that young adults are equally susceptible to worn-out knees and shoulders, too.
Currently, Dr. Richard Scheinberg enjoys the status of being a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned this title in 1982 and has amassed more than three decades of medical experience in the following years. He is presently on the staff of the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, the Pueblo Surgery Center and Carrillo Surgery Center. He is also founder and principal of The Santa Barbara Stem Cell Clinic as well as a member of both the California Society of Industrial Medicine and Surgery and the California Orthopedic Association.
While his continued work in the field has brought personal satisfaction, so too has the fact that he’s been able to treat professional tennis players like Andre Agassi and Jimmy Connors. As an expert on orthopedic issues, Dr. Richard Scheinberg would eventually be called upon to help treat Connors as he dealt with medical issues and that fact helps to demonstrate Dr. Scheinberg’s skills and knowledge. Dr. Richard Scheinberg operated on Jimmy Connors’ wrist and 6 months after surgery he reached the semifinals of the US Open at the age of 39.
